Union members protesting anti labour law at the Murtala Muhammed Airport on September 12,2022

 

Aviation unions in Nigeria have occupied the access roads to the local and international wing of the Murtal Muhammed Airport in  Lagos to drive home their demand for the removal of some clauses in the Civil Aviation Act which they consider are not in the best interest of the workers.

The protest which took place this morning  was peaceful, but slow down vehicular movement in and around the Airport.

. On September 7,2022,the unions through their leaders in a world press conference gave a notice of the peaceful demonstration if the government failed to identify, punish and remove the contentious provisions.

Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority(NCAA),Federal Airports Authority(FAAN) Nigerian Airspace Management Agency(NAMA)  gates were securely locked.

While the protest lasted,none of the staff of the agencies had access to their various offices or lurking around.

According to the General Secretary National Union of Air Transport Employees(NUATE),Ocheme Aba, who spoke on behalf  of  Nigerian Aviation Professionals(ANAP),Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria(ATSSSAN,National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers(NAAPE) said the intention of the government is to regulate labour and gag the unions which goes contrary to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention.

The  NUATE Secretary General  warned that  failure to meet  their demands, in the  next 14 days, the unions would have no option but to go on a full blown indefinite nationwide strike.
